Will Planning: A Necessary Consideration

Will planning Do you have a will? Whether your estate is large or small, a will is a necessary document to ensure your intentions are carried out as you wish after you have left this earth. Take the initiative and act now before something unexpected happens. By preparing beforehand you will save time and unnecessary frustration for those you leave behind. Think of it as a gift you leave your love ones because you cared enough to lessen their burdens as much as possible.

There are a few things that you need to know in order to make this as easy as possible. Since each state has its own laws and regulations it is best to consult with an experienced attorney who can steer you in the right direction when drafting a will that clearly communicates your wishes and desires. This is especially true if you have a friend or charitable organization you wish to name as your beneficiary. For parents, a will clearly designates who will care for your minor children until they reach adulthood and also put into place how any funds you have put away for them will be distributed. When the state is left to decide, you may not be pleased with whom they choose, so enlist the help of an expert so your wishes are carried through.

Question… Now that you are getting older,  who do you want to make decisions on your behalf?

Whomever it is, make sure the person who you designate to be an executor or trustee is able to carry out your wishes. There are many responsibilities that are required, therefore, you want someone you can trust and who also has your best interests at heart.

Will Planning for Life

If you have a will then it is smart to update it so that there are no gaps and no one is left out. You should do this each time you experience a life change, such as:

  • Additions to the family
  • Changes in Marital Status
  • A big change in your Financial Assets
  • Travel Plans
  • Moving to another state where the laws are different

Start now and make a plan to ensure your wishes are acted upon so nobody has to read your mind and risk that your loved ones are not taken care of when you do leave this earth. Proper will planning is an important consideration that must be handled with great care. Making the necessary decisions can seem difficult but doing so will help in ensure that those who mean the most will be provided for without question. Feel free to share some of your own experiences in this area. It may help or inspire others to move in the right direction and take care of this necessary consideration before it’s too late.
