Did you know your body is constantly healing? Healing is not an event like recovery from the loss of a loved one, or getting over surgery or the flu.
Most people don’t realize their body’s health maintenance program is running 24 hours a day 365 days per year. Old cells are always being sloughed off and new skin, hair, bone, blood, muscle, glandular, and organ cells are constantly replacing the old. Your body is constantly managing bacteria and viruses, and always rebalancing to accommodate internal and external stressors. Knowing that your body is always at work makes it easier to understand why self-love, self-care, and positive thoughts are necessary if you want a strong and healthy body.
Expectations about illness and injury are built into your belief system
If you have a scratch on your leg or a fever blister on your lip, you expect them to heal quickly. If you have a health issue that is challenging, you most likely look outside yourself for the answers. We are not taught to believe that our body is constantly working to maintain health and automatically heal if there are enough internal resources available. If not, it will adapt to allow as much healing as possible. It is our job as adults to make this mental-emotional shift in awareness so our children and grandchildren grow up knowing how to care and nurture themselves. Health and healing is so much more than diet and exercise.
Western medicine teaches us to go straight to the doctor for help. Because of our habitual dependence on our doctor’s diagnosis and medicine to create wellness, we forget the miracles that lie within us. We forget that we have the capability for insight and intuition, and we forget that we are wired for joy and positive mental, emotional, and physical health.
At times medication or surgery are essential to recovery from serious illness, but equally important, or maybe more powerful than any medication, are the inner conditions created by your beliefs and thoughts. Your positive beliefs and thoughts are medicine. Positive beliefs lower stress and keep your immune system strong. They affect the length and severity of any current illness and determine how your mind- body system will respond to any illness or injury you might encounter in the future. You have more input into your health than you think!
A serious diagnosis often creates two responses: (1) The urge to “fight” the illness and (2) Ownership. Owning an illness and fighting with it increases your stress level and directs all your attention to the illness and too little attention to your ability to heal. Your attempts at healing through “owning the illness” and “fighting the disease” may be very genuine and heart felt, but as long as you “fight rather than accept” and “own instead of working with” your body is unable to function at its highest capacity. Your relationship with your body is the most important relationship you have.
As you decide to work with your body (become mindful) you make love your relationship partner, and it becomes your best ally. You accept, forgive, and co-operate and your mind and body synchronize to increase the likelihood you will regain your highest possible level of health.
During quiet meditative moments you begin to talk with the imbalance that challenges your body. You might begin the conversation like this. “Body, I love you. What can I do to help you re-create balance? What do you need to function at your best?” Below are some ideas for contemplation as you mindfully seek solutions to emotional attitudes and beliefs and any physical health issues you might have.
8 Steps to Loving Yourself Well
1) Accept this fact: Your body believes everything you say and does its best to make your beliefs true for you.
2) Create the calm inner atmosphere needed for good health.
3) Own your body’s inborn power to heal.
4) Build balance and inner harmony externally and internally.
5) Make sure your mind-body communication is clear
6) Speak kindly to yourself no matter what is going on.
7) Talk to your medication before taking it. “Thank you medicine for helping me regain health. You are just what I need right now, and I accept you as a helper and friend.”
8) Remember “Healing is achieved by turning on the light of your soul and allowing it to shine. Living from your heart center and within the awareness of your own light, Living within high frequency virtues that support and sustain a positive, robust life. Trusting in the process of life and trusting your own wisdom .” Nurturing Wellness through Radical Self-Care p. 11: Janet Gallagher Nestor (2012)
